Two young fathers and former manual workers who are afflicted by long-term physical problems are rapidly climbing the ICT skills ladder to new goals. Martyn Griffiths, 36, and David Bramwell, 37, both of Trecynon, near Aberdare, RCT, knew practically nothing about IT before signing up for a basic PC course run by the WEA at Hirwaun.
Within a year they escalated to City & Guilds level 2 in computer maintenance and IT systems support at Coleg Morgannwg, Aberdare, and to a multi-media foundation course provided in the community by Swansea University.
Both men hope to combine their skills and qualifications and go into partnership by the end of 2008, exploring viable options to serve both domestic and commercial sectors. “By incorporating different aspects and skills across the IT range we know that the limits are endless,” says David. “The more we know, the bigger the field we have to play on.” Martyn says: “It’s brilliant - these courses are transforming our lives. Instead of being stuck at home we are constantly learning and finding out new things. We know that we need to have all the right skills and qualifications if we are to achieve our goals.”
